The Situation
In contrast to the fluctuating fortunes of the semiconductor market, Marvell Technology Group has enjoyed a consistent run of success. From its IPO in 2000 to its 1,381 percent growth rate from 2000 – 2004, Marvell has dealt successfully with its tremendous fortunes while other organizations across the economy have floundered. One of the keys to Marvell’s success has been the implementation of the Oracle E-Business Suite. But even managing the Oracle E-Business Suite has not been without its challenges.
The Challenge
In a market as dynamic and fluid as semiconductor manufacturing, business processes continually need to change. Failure to adapt can mean failure to exist. As a result, Marvell continually enhances its implementation of the Oracle E-Business Suite to meet the changing market climate. However, migrating these enhancements to production can occur only during Marvell’s bi-weekly maintenance window meaning Marvell’s DBAs are frequently racing the clock to complete the migrations before the maintenance window closes. “We have a 14-hour maintenance window every other week. The window begins Friday evening and ends Saturday morning,” said Gajarajan Nagarajan, technical manager for Marvell. “During this window, a DBA can be required to migrate up to 20 enhancements. And an enhancement can take up to 45 minutes to migrate. That’s 15 hours of work in a 14-hour window and that’s not going to work.” Added Nagarajan, “In addition, by requiring my DBAs to perform this work overnight and on the weekend, I was limiting the overall productivity of my DBAs. I needed a simpler way.”
The Solution
To address the resource and workload situation, Marvell sought out a third-party solution. It investigated several solutions from the vendor community before settling on Migration Director. “We looked at HP/Mercury Object Migrator but felt it was too expensive and the implementation timeframe was too long. We were already working with Unitask, so we investigated using Migration Director.” Migration Director enables Oracle professionals to create packages of AOL and setup objects that can be migrated between Oracle E-Business Suite instances. With its ZeroERROR™ migration approach, organizations can control which objects are migrated accurately and securely leading to increased administrator and business analyst productivity as well as application uptime. Migration Director’s simplified deployment and ability to automate the migration of more objects than all other competitor sets it apart in the market.
The Transition
“We first installed Migration Director in our lab and ran tests for 30 days. After that, we ran both the Migration Director migration process and our manual process for three weeks in pre-production instances to ensure Migration Director would work without incident in production. Then, we simply moved to Migration Director as our standard object migration process. The interface was easy to understand so training for administrators was negligible.”
The Results
- Marvell has realized measurable improvements in their Oracle E-Business Suite management process as a result of its investment in Migration Director. Among these are:
- A reduction in the time required in migrating AOL objects
- The ability to complete the migration during the scheduled maintenance window
- Increased productivity of DBAs as they no longer need to perform the migration process
- Zero administrative errors
“The AOL Object migration process that used to take us 45 minutes now takes one minute using Unitask Migration Director,” said Nagarajan. “The transition from our manual process to Migration Director was very straightforward and without incident. Our reliance on Migration Director will continue to grow with each new version.”
