Frequently, we hear that the world is changing. No place is this more evident than in the role of the modern CIO. Once thought of as a senior techie-type who kept machines and systems running in a raised-floor cold room at the end of the hallway, the integrated worldwide economy has now taken a systems leadership position and transformed it into a new role, what we could think of as a CAO: Chief Alignment Officer.
As a new type of leader, the CAO must consider strategies that are multi-dimensional. In the contemporary business enterprise, technology is no longer a solution in and of itself. Rather, the alignment of technology that immediately services the needs of the business and delivers a tangible hard return on top line revenues or bottom line profits is a must. Topical projects such as social networking, portals, and mobile enablement are only viable initiatives if they can exceed the corporate mandate for return on investment in real dollars--dollars that enable the business to directly grow and flourish.
The traditional methodology of faster MIPS, more RAM, and gigabytes per whatever, no longer has relevance when the modern CIO / CAO is charged with delivering strategies to grow revenue at the required rates over the fiscal year.
Align the business. Align the solutions.
The world is changing. As technologists, we are all tasked with ensuring we solve the challenges of our client businesses and their customers: newfangled is simply no longer enough.
